Exams Posted: All of the Midterm Exam II scores are posted to
the Grades pages and the Estimates are current. Please check your score with bonus before
deciding whether to take the optional comprehensive exam. FINAL TASK: Do the Online Course Evaluation! This term definitely fit the ancient curse: May
you live in interesting times. I
would greatly appreciate feedback on what worked, what didnt, and what
should be done if this course has to be taught via distance in the future
put this advice into the Comments section, please! Final Scores Check: Please check your scores, and if there is a
discrepancy, do the following: 1.) Go to your Sent Mail folder and look for your submission 2.) Forward your original
submission to
Dr. Jensen (see 3 5, below) 3.) The Subject

16 APR Online Class Lecture
Re-recorded (and posted): The online class lecture picked up some audio
information that could not ethically be shared (ironically). That recording has been destroyed and a
re-recorded video is available on the D2L page for the course. The material on the re-recorded lecture is a
subset of the material from the online recording. No one will be responsible, for examination
or grading purposes, for material that was not covered in both
instances. (That means that there is
no penalty for not participating in the online class, and there is no need
for those that participated in the online class to have to view the
re-recorded class.) You may, however,
choose to review the re-recording. |

Grade Estimates Corrected: I made a sorting error when I posted the Grade
Estimates about a week or so ago, and I only found the error about 11:30 this
morning. The corrected scores are now
posted online. The earlier scores did NOT post correctly for ALL
grade codes, and so the entire HW, Labs, Bonus and Exam I scores posted
before 4/9/2020 12:10 PM would be incorrect. You may need to refresh your page/frame if
the old post date appears. Please check your corrected scores and address any
discrepancies before 12:00 Noon on Friday, 08 MAY 2020. |

Schedule Page Updated for End
of Term: Since
it looks like we now know the administrative constraints for Finals, I have
put a plan together for the end of the term on the Schedule Page. 14 APR Lecture Will be
Experimental: In
yesterdays All Faculty Meeting, President Rankin and Provost Roberts
reiterated that campus access will be extremely curtailed for everyone. While I wont have much access to the lab,
I can schedule some access to the lab, and as luck will have
it, ONE of our lab robots happens to be mounted on a pallet and
can be controlled with my OLD laptop. I
will schedule a time to retrieve it tomorrow, and I will see if I can find a
good way to put together a robot programming video lecture that will be
worthwhile for you. Sometimes,
however, experiments can fail. If that
happens, Ill let you know that you can take the class off. 16 APR Lecture Will be ONLINE: The
Engineering Ethics Lecture will need some class participation, so I plan to
send ZOOM invitations by 15 APR. If
you cannot participate, the class will be recorded and posted online by noon
that day. There is no penalty for not
attending online. There
will be a written BONUS points assignment that will follow from this
lecture. It will post on 21 APR and be
due by 5:00 PM on Friday, 24 APR. This
assignment will count as two bonuses for course grade. Term Project: Without
some extended time in the lab, I will not be able to gather the information
needed for a term project, nor can we count on sufficient only access for you
and your lab team to collaborate this term. Fortunately,
a review of the course syllabus shows that the combination of labs and the
project together account for 30% of the course weight. Since everyone in the class was well caught
up in lab before break, that means 30% of your final grade is already MIDTERM EXAM II Format Change: Exam
II will be an open class resources format (you may use materials
available on the COURSE WEBSITE in addition to your engineering
notebook.) The
purpose of this change is to eliminate problems for those who do not have a
printer available for prepping your engineering notebook. Exam
II will primarily consist of work-out and short answer questions. The
exam file will become available by 23 APR and
will be DUE by 5:00 PM Mountain Time on 30 APR. It is strongly suggested that
you START the exam at the regular class time of 11:00 AM on Tuesday, 28 APR You may ask questions of the Course Instructor to complete the
exam. You may NOT consult with anyone else to complete the exam. OPTIONAL COMPREHENSIVE EXAM: This
exam is optional it will replace BOTH Exam I and Exam II
scores if taken but ONLY IF IT WILL IMPROVE YOUR
GRADE. It will likely be a RESPONDUS multiple guess/short answer
format with a time limit, but the actual format is not yet established. It will available by 8:00 AM on
04 MAY and will be DUE at NOON on Friday, 08 MAY. It
will likely be machine graded
and it is unlikely that you will have your
Midterm Exam II results ahead of the start time. (Exam II will require a lot of grading
time.) Please see the Discussion Page for more responses to course
delivery issues you may be experiencing. |

Lectures Videos are Being
Posted Earlier for Overnight Download: In
response to a student request, the course lecture videos will be posted
earlier (usually about 10:00 PM the night before schedule) so that they may
be downloaded overnight (when internet traffic is lower). The
pre-recorded, online lecture videos are still posted to the course D2L website. Please go there to access the videos. Please see the Discussion Page for more responses to course
delivery issues you may be experiencing. |

Lectures Videos are Online for
2nd Half of Spring 2020: The
SDSM&T administration is requiring that the pre-recorded, online lecture
videos be posted to the course D2L
website. Please go there to access the
videos. The
videos are pre-recorded and are available by 8:00 AM MDT on the scheduled
day. Distance Office Hours / Help
Sessions for 2nd Half of Spring 2020: Since
I have no way to conduct lab simulations for my courses, I will use the times
from 12:00 Noon to 4:00 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays for online office
hours. Initially, these office hours
will be via e-mailed questions, but I will try to set up virtual meetings as
the situation improves. Please
e-mail your questions to me with the Subject: IENG 475
Questions, and I will post summarized questions and responses to the new
Discussion Page on our course website (as quickly as my fingers can type). The
Discussion Page may be copied and pasted into your Engineering Notebooks for
use on future exams so asking your question will benefit the whole of the
class dont be afraid to ask! Note on Grade Estimates for
Spring 2020: Please
check your scores on the Grades: Estimates Page and bring any discrepancies
to my attention. If you find that an
assignment score is missing, please check your Sent E-mail folder for your
original submission, and if you find it FORWARD the
original e-mail (and attachments) to me with the Subject:
IENG 475 Correction. Please
be aware that if the Subject line information is not correct, your e-mailed
material may be mis-routed or even sent to the SPAM folder. (I teach several classes and labs, each of
which have online assignments!) Sometimes,
I make mistakes, too. The important
thing is to correct them in-time
so checking periodically is a good idea. |

Additional Resources for Exam
I: Near
the bottom of the Materials Page are links to HW Solutions and an Old Exam
Solution. Remember
that NONE of these documents may show up in an engineering notebook that
would be a violation of Academic Honesty. Also,
an older version of HW 00 Soln was posted earlier. Please review the THIS
TERM solution before the exam and remember to use the SDSMT
equation for MRR in a Turning Operation. |

Career Fair: Since
our CNC Lathe is out-of-commission, and some of you appear to want to acquire
a job during the Career Fair, we will not have regular laboratory
meeting this week (03-FEB to 07-FEB-2020). However,
the IENG 475 class will meet as scheduled. |

Re-Test Option for Exam I
Spring 2018: Due
to weather-related circumstances, many of the class had two or three exams
when our original Exam I was scheduled, many had one back-to-back with our
exam. The Re-Test option is available
for anyone who scored less than 89.9% on the initial exam. If you take the re-test, I will give you
the higher of the two exam scores (but it will be capped at 89.9%). The
re-test will follow the same format, same type of material, and similar
questions in similar order. You must
turn in your initial exam to take the re-test. An
e-mail will go out to the class after the last lab on Thursday, letting
everyone know the details of the exam timing and location. will use this information to arrange four to five person lab teams and lab
times for the semester, and I will let you know (via e-mail) which lab
time/team you will be assigned to by 10:00 PM on Monday 12 JAN. As
you may already know, the lab teams for this course will be designing and
performing the manufacturing engineering required for an industrial-grade
product. The product will be selected
by the team before the end of the first week in February, and we will discuss
the constraints for the product on Monday, as well. In addition to CNC Lathe, Mill, Laser
Cutting/Engraving processes, we have five PLA 3-D Printers, and a 3-D Laser
Scanner. This will make for some
interesting project possibilities. There
is NO REQUIRED text book for this class; however, you will need TWO
engineering notebooks (one for class/exam purposes, and one for lab
purposes). Please have them by your
first scheduled LAB time. If
you are interested in the tentative class schedule, it is currently online
