Class: This course is NOT held on the SDSM&T main
campus. This class meets in the Active
Learning Classroom (IER 205) on the second floor of the downtown campus. The building is located at 520 Kansas City Street. Since it will take a minimum of 25 minutes
to walk from the main campus to the building, class will typically start at
9:35 AM. Parking at
the Industrial Engineering & Research Building: If you have an SDSM&T parking sticker of ANY type,
you may park in the spots marked SMD in the lot on the East side of the
building. Alternatively, you may also
park in the metered spots along Kansas City street, etc. DO NOT PARK IN THE EITHER THE NON-SMD SPOTS
OR THE GRAVEL LOT – you will likely be towed at your own expense by the firms
that rent those other spots. If you
get towed, it will probably be without warning. Course

Term Project Selection: Each student is to send an e-mail to the instructor
with the following information before 11 Nov: Subject Line: IENG 471 Project Preferences In the body of the email, give me: ·
Names of two preferred
team members (first & last names) ·
Titles of two
preferred projects (first choice and second choice) ·
A Random Number
between 1 and 99 and
make sure that you have your name at the end of the e-mail. I will do the best that I can to accommodate the
maximum preferences, but no guarantees. Solutions

Term Project Descriptions
Linked: Descriptions for term projects for the Fall 2014 are
linked on the Materials page. I do not
yet have confirmation on the Ellsworth EAFB project option, but the other
projects will be available to choose from.
There may be multiple teams working on the same project(s). Term Project teams will have four members (five members
only with special circumstances), and teams will have the option to “fire”
non-performing members. The time after
the second exam will be available to work on the projects (there will not be
any regularly scheduled IENG 471 class meetings until the final
presentations). Please look ahead and
start to decide which persons you would be willing to work with, and which
projects you would be willing to work on. Team project selections and team composition decisions
will be made about the time of the second exam. |

HW 5 Deadline Changed: Due to faculty illness14 OCT, the due
date for HW 5 has been changed to 21 OCT at the start of class.
The material will be covered during class time on 16 OCT. Get
your flu shot! Schedule
Changes: Since more than half the IE faculty will be presenting
research at the FIE conference in Spain, we
will NOT have class on 23 OCT. We
will combine topics for class on 21 OCT, and possibly reduce an upcoming HW
assignment so that we may also plan for the term project(s) before the second
exam. The new date for EXAM II will be 06 NOV. |

HW 3 Rework: Correct/revise your HW 3 system model to address the
following questions: 1. Assume that the machine assignments were changed to 2
machines per operator for each of the four machines. How do your unit costs change? Do those changes make sense? 2. Assume that your annual quota increases by 50% (keeping
the changes in 1.). According to your
model, how do your unit costs change?
Do those changes make sense? 3. Keeping your changes in (1 & 2), assume that you
switch to 3 shifts of 8 hours each.
Now, according to your model, how do your unit costs change? Do those changes make sense? Notice that you must verify your model before
attempting to answer these kinds of questions. Specifically: a.) You must verify the mechanics of your model’s
calculations b.) You must verify the logic of your model’s operations c.) You must verify the assumptions underlying your model’s
predictions Work on this as a team for 20-30 minutes, then discuss your conclusions with the class. 9/25/2014
3:25 PM Update: If you were not
in class today due to a university-accepted reason (athletic trip, job
interview), please perform the rework on your own, then discuss your
conclusions with the instructor during the next office hours (Tuesday). HW Solutions discussed today are linked on
the Materials Page. |
