Instruction Reminders for HW
1: Please use the EP paper for the Alphabet of
Lines (just label each line and draw it using the line weight and pattern –
don’t sketch the example drawing beside it). Draw directly on the other two (copy)
sheets – try to get the proportions pretty close and the line types
correct. But if you did all the work on EP paper, that’s fine, too! Don’t forget to fill out the title blocks
on the EP paper (or else make a cover sheet), and staple them together when
turning them in. See you at class. |

SolidWorks Software
Installation for 2015-2016: You will need to have the 2015-2016 Academic Version of SolidWorks operational on your SDSM&T
tablet by Thursday of this week (17 SEP). The instructions for the initial installation are
posted on the Materials Page (use the 2015 Instructions). Note that these are the same instructions
that we used for class, with one important exception: the “workaround” files must be copied to your desktop,
and then run from your desktop in order to avoid the registry error
message at the end. After you have successfully installed and tested your
program, then you can delete the “workaround” files from your desktop. To Test Your SolidWorks
Installation: Start the SolidWorks program (it takes a while to
load), then click on the Tutorials
option on the right side of your screen.
If the tutorials window opens up, then you are golden! (And you can
also start on Lab 1…) If the
Tutorials link does NOT work, then you
will need to repair your installation.
This will take about an hour.
Follow all the same steps as the 2015 instructions (run Disable, etc …), except make sure to check the Repair option
instead of Modify. After installation,
run Re-Enable and then Re-Start your tablet before testing with the tutorials
again. If you cannot get SolidWorks installed, see Dr. Jensen. After you have successfully installed and tested your
program, then you can delete the “workaround” files from
your desktop. |

Term 2015. I reserve the right to
update the lecture slides just before presenting the material in class. Any corrections or changes to course
material will be noted on this page – including tips for specific problems. Starting Time for IENG 248
Class: This course is NOT held on the SDSM&T main
campus. This class meets in the Active
Learning Classroom (IER 205) on the second floor of the downtown campus. The building is located at 520 Kansas City Street. Since it will take a minimum of 25 minutes
to walk from the main campus to the building, class will typically start at
1:15 PM. Parking at
the Industrial Engineering & Research Building: If you have an SDSM&T parking sticker of ANY type,
you may park in the spots marked SMD in the lot on the East side of the
building. Alternatively, you may also
park in the metered spots along Kansas City street, etc. DO NOT PARK IN THE EITHER THE NON-SMD SPOTS
OR THE GRAVEL LOT – you will likely be towed at your own expense by the firms
that rent those other spots. If you
get towed, it will probably be without warning. Course

Text Page References in
Presentation Slides: The correct version of the MGC text is the 4th
Edition. Many of the references in the
presentation slides are for illustrations common to both the 4th
and the 3rd editions. I
will try to keep both references in future presentations, but for Tuesday’s
lecture, here are the 3rd edition references: Slide 14 – Runouts reference Fig. 5.45, p.140. Slide 14 – Conventional Edges reference Figs. 5.46
& 5.47, pp.140-141. Slide 15 – Revolution Conventions reference Figs. 5.57,
and 5.58, pp. 148-149. If you
don’t have a text, get one soon. See the HW
links on the Schedule page to find problems for this week if you have the
older text … |

Class Cancellation 16 SEP
2014: Due to a medical issue, class will not be held today
(9/16/14). Please use the time to work
on or improve your current HW assignment.
The new due date for this assignment will be at the start of class on
23 SEP 2014. The Schedule page will be updated to reflect these
changes. Apologies for the late notice … |

First Assignment: HW01 is to complete the four tasks discussed in class: 1.) Sketch and label each of the “Alphabet of Lines” onto
the EP paper (just sketch the line and label it, don’t draw the object in the
right hand column of the handout). 2.) Repeat each letter on Worksheet 3.5 in the grey grid on
the worksheet. 3.) Sketch each of the figures on Worksheet 3.3 in the
adjacent grid on the worksheet. 4.) Create a cover page on the final sheet of EP paper for
(1 – 3) and staple all the pages together.
This HW is due at class time on Tuesday, 02 SEP. Load Lab Software Task: Go to the Materials
page and follow the links “Installing SolidWorks (IE)” and “Installing MasterCAM (IE)” for instructions on how to load the
software onto your SDSM&T computer.
You may need to do this onsite at the downtown campus (class room,
lab, or collaboration area) in order to connect to the IE server version of
the software. This may take some time
(up to 2 hours), so we will start the process in class on Tuesday, 02 SEP –
so bring your computer! Change in
Parking at the Industrial Engineering & Research Building: They have changed the layout of the parking lot! Note that the SMD parking spots are now in
the middle two rows of the lot (and some are marked in PINK paint,
while others are marked in yellow). If you have an SDSM&T parking sticker of ANY type,
you may park in the spots marked SMD in the lot on the East side of the
